That Week Before Your Period: Why You Feel Like You’re Falling Apart (and What to Do About It)

You wake up feeling off.

You’re more emotional than usual—tears over commercials, random irritability, and a sense that everything is just a little too much.

Your clothes feel tighter.

You’re bloated.

The mirror feels cruel. You wonder if all your hard work has been undone overnight.

Your cravings are intense, your energy is low, and you’re mentally exhausted.

You start questioning everything—your progress, your body, your routine.

And worst of all… you feel like giving up.

Sound familiar?

And then—boom.

You get your period.

Suddenly everything clicks into place. That wave of chaos? It wasn’t you “losing it”—it was your hormones doing what they do.

You’re Not Alone.

Over the past few months, I’ve had this exact conversation with so many of my clients.

They come to me overwhelmed, emotional, bloated, and frustrated… and completely unaware that their cycle is the root cause.

So let’s talk about how to support yourself in that “dreaded” week leading up to your period—without spiraling.

1.

Start Tracking Your Cycle

If you’re not already using a period tracking app, start now.

Knowing when your period is due gives you clarity and helps you better understand what’s happening in your body. PMS symptoms make a lot more sense when they’re not catching you off guard.

2.

Set a Gentle Reminder

A few days before your period is expected, set a reminder on your phone or planner that says:

“Period coming in 1 week. Check your note to self.”

Then…

3.

Write Yourself a Kind Note

Create a note in your phone or journal to read during that week.

Here’s an example:

Dear [Your Name],

Just a little reminder to be gentle with yourself this week. You may feel emotional, irritable, or bloated—and that’s okay. It’s not you, it’s your hormones. Rest if you need to. Don’t panic about your progress. You’re doing amazing. Be kind. Love yourself a little extra right now. ❤️

The Truth:

You can’t control the hormone fluctuations.

But you can control your mindset.

You can prepare, support yourself with compassion, and remind yourself: this is temporary.

You are not broken. You are not starting over.

You’re simply moving through a very real, very natural phase of your cycle.

So the next time this week rolls around… remember:

You’ve got this. And it’s okay to give yourself some extra grace.
