“I want a booty.”
It’s one of the most common fitness goals I hear from women these days.
But have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you want one?
Is it to look better? Fit into your clothes more comfortably? Feel more confident? Get stronger? Improve your gym performance?
Whatever your reason, building your glutes comes with benefits that go far beyond just aesthetics. But here’s the truth: you won’t achieve that sculpted look with a few bodyweight squats or occasional cardio sessions. Building strong, defined glutes requires time, intention, proper nutrition, and consistent training.
Let’s break down what it really takes to grow your glutes:
⸻
🍑 Eat in a Calorie Surplus
If you’re not fueling your body properly, muscle growth won’t happen. You need to be eating above your maintenance calories—not drastically, but enough to support new muscle. Remember: you can’t grow in a deficit.
⸻
🍑 Focus on Progressive Overload
Challenge your muscles by lifting weights in the 8–12 rep range, and gradually increase the load over time. This signals your glutes to grow and adapt. Don’t shy away from the heavy stuff—muscle needs stimulus.
⸻
🍑 Master the Basics
Base your workouts around compound movements like hip thrusts, lunges, Bulgarian split squats, stiff-leg deadlifts, and squats. These are the heavy hitters for glute development. Strength in these lifts = growth.
⸻
🍑 Prioritize Glute Activation
Many women struggle with their quads taking over during lower body exercises. Try adjusting your stance, using a wider foot placement, and focusing on pushing through your heels to better engage the glutes. Once you feel the right muscles working, it’s time to add load.
⸻
🍑 Use Banded Movements (Strategically)
While bands alone won’t build a booty, they’re an awesome tool for activation. Use them at the start of your workout to wake up your glutes, and again at the end for high-rep finishers that target the smaller stabilizing muscles.
⸻
These are the exact strategies I use with my clients—and they work. You won’t build strong glutes overnight, but if you stay consistent and trust the process, the results will come.
